Bloody Mary—I mean Maria. ¡Tequila!

It’s not that I’ve grown bored with my typical breakfast Bloody Mary, but I did think a little change was in order … not too much, mind you. And I happen to have a lot of tequila on hand. So I altered some components of my basic Bloody Mary and based it on tequila. I still used pepper, horseradish, lemon juice, and celery bitters. I added cumin and ancho powder and a little garlic salt. I used some habanero salsa (I should have used more). Instead of olive or pickle juice, I used some nopales juice. I added extra vegan Worcestershire sauce. For garnish, I used one of the last cherry tomatoes from the garden with an olive and a nopalito strip. Most importantly I sang my Bloody Mary song in Spanish (to the tune of “Bloody Mary” in South Pacific). “Sangre Maria es la bebida para mí …” That’s probably terrible Spanish, but I did use my “Spanish voice.” Remember high school Spanish class in the eighties? And those listen and repeat cassette tapes? The honey-voiced (or perhaps agave-nectar-voiced) man, who said in a rich romantic baritone, “modelo.” It was authoritative. He sounded like a thick-mustached star of a Mexican soap opera. His nickname was El Guapo. Yeah, that’s the voice I used … so you know this drink is muy bueno. ¡A su salud!
